Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders
Billy Joe Saunders takes on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez this weekend and this will be one of the biggest fights of the year. Can Billy Joe Saunders cause Canelo problems? We take a look at the best boxing tips.
As a UK based boxing fan i don’t think the UK public will be getting behind this anywhere near as much as they should be. Billy Joe Saunders just doesn’t capture the publics attention in the same way Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury do and a lot of that is down to his social media behavior but also he just hasn’t been in big enough fights for a casual fan to really take notice. If we look at those recent results then it looks pretty likely that this will go the distance as Canelo’s fights with Jacobs and Callum Smith did. I’d argue Billy Joe Saunders does then have the boxing ability and style to have a chance but as we know Canelo seems to have the favour of the judges.
The current odds show Canelo as a 1/6 favourite and it’s 9/2 for Billy Joe Saunders to win the fight with William Hill. That seems incredibly short to me but does seem to take into account that it’s unlikely Saunders will be able to KO Canelo and that he would be unlikely to get a decision. It’s 10/11 for Canelo by KO, TKO or DQ and 6/4 for Canelo to win by decision or technical decision.
Canelo – Recent Fights
Canelo’s most recent fight was against Avni Yildirim and it was a complete and utter mismatch. Yildirim had already lost comprehensively to Chris Eubank Jr and had lost his previous fight. Canelo’s fight before that was against Callum Smith, a fight Canelo won on points and was expected to be a tough fight for Canelo given the size of Callum Smith. The fight before that was a win against Sergey Kovalev who was again big but limited. Then before that you have points wins over Daniel Jacobs and a TKO of Rocky Fielding and then it’s the two Golovkin fights.
Billy Joe Saunders – Recent Fights
Billy Joe Saunders last fight was against Martin Murray where Saunders won by decision, prior to that he beat Marcelo Esteban Coceres, Shefat Isufi and Charles Adamu. You then need to go back to 2017 for his best victory against David Lemieux and that probably sums up Saunder’s career. At 31 he is still somewhat untested.
I think Billy Joe Saunders has a better chance than most think but i can’t look past the 6/4 on offer for Canelo by decision. That really is a steal in my opinion given Canelo’s KO record isn’t that great.
